Born in Egypt of Lebanese parents in 1920, Andrée Chedid is today one of the most renowned contemporary French writers. She spent the final years of her formal education in the American University of Cairo before settling in Paris in 1946 with her doctor husband.

She has written more than thirty-five books and won major awards, including the 1994 Prix Paul Morand. Her work has been translated into several languages as well as English.
