Synopsis
Born and raised on inner-city streets in Bradford, M Y Alam's debut novel tells a story from a Britain we all thought existed, but were never quite sure how. We see events through the eyes of Ammy, a wannabe writer who works in a shop until one day the police barge in, march him down to the station and charge him with the murder of a frail old customer by the name of Annie Potts… It's not easy to write when you work in a shop. Customers can tend to break your concentration. It's not easy to deal with rejection from an editor either, especially when he reminds you of that little fat bloke from the film Deliverance. It's not easy listening to rumours from people who don't know the difference between fact and fiction. No wonder all his stories are about killers. Ammy's a writer and he writes. And now, he's going for it, the big time. The problem is, nobody's interested. Things have to change. And they do. The police are outside his house, giving it the Ringo Starr with his doors. Annie Potts, they tell him, is dead. And what's more, they think he did it. "If this doesn't win awards, then there is no justice. But that's the whole point, isn't it?" Artscene M Y Alam is the author of two novels, Annie Potts is Dead and Kilo, has had several short stories published and is the editor of Made in Bradford. He is a researcher and teacher at the University of Bradford working in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities.
