Art, Survival And So Forth - The Poetry of Charles Bukowski by Smith, Jules

This is the book that thoughtful fans of Charles Bukowski have been waiting for. Based on over ten years' research, this pioneering study places Bukowski's work in its cultural context, and explores the key poems in his development, from the mid-1940s to The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992). Want to know about Bukowski and the movies, the Beats, Hemingway, Céline and Walt Whitman? About how and why Bukowski formed his unique style and image? Or about where Bukowski fits in to West Coast and post-War American verse?

This is the essential book to have. Also contains illustrations, uncollected poems, and an introduction by Gerald Locklin.

Fatuous in content & academically pretentious in tone - I wish I hadn't bothered. Smith makes ludicrous claims for the book's limited subject matter
