Banipal is an independent literary magazine publishing contemporary authors and poets from all over the Arab world in English translation. Banipal was founded in 1998 by Margaret Obank and Iraqi author Samuel Shimon. There are three issues each year presenting established and new Arab authors and poets in English for the first time via poems, short stories or excerpts from novels. Banipal also contains author interviews, profiles and book reviews. Each issue is well illustrated with author photographs and the covers feature the works of prominent Arab artists. A new subscription to Banipal includes two free back issues. Banipal has come 7th out of 102 UK literary magazines in the Incrwriters Society Magazine Award 2006 for Excellence in UK Publishing.
