"How suitable that Dick Davis, who gave us superb English versions of medieval Persian epigrams, should now compose witty, shapely, and polished epigrams that exhibit something like Philip Larkin’s mordancy, but with a fine blend of thoughtfulness and levity that is Mr Davis’s own. Yet beyond or in addition to these crisp works we are given a handful of very moving and eloquent poems… [that] lend immense depth and strength to this uncommonly glittering collection" – Anthony Hecht

Dick Davis was born in 1945. He has worked as a teacher in various places around the world including Iran, where he lived for eight years. He was Northern Arts Literary Fellow at Durham and Newcastle from 1985 to 1987, and he now teaches Persian at Ohio State University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
