Synopsis
Everything in the forest was sacred to the King. To fell a tree was a crime, even to cut a branch… As for shooting one of the deer! Only in the forest would he be safe… Fold said it was full of outlaws, old soldiers who had no work, escaped serfs and men who had broken the law…” Bows Against the Barons is a re-issue of a children's classic, illustrated by C. Walter Hodges, winner of the Kate Greenaway Award fir illustration. "A seminal work of socialist literature for children.... an inspirational read." - Allan Gibbons
I still have the second edition I was given in the 1950s as a Christmas present. At a time when my world view and my politics were developing, this had an entirely beneficial effect! And re-reading it later as an adult, I stand by that assessment. But my main reason for dropping by here is to commend to you to The Trease Project which you can find at treaseproject.livejournal.com where Farah Mendlesohn is reading and commenting on all of Trease's books. Her review of Bows Against The Barons is at treaseproject.livejournal.com/1870.html

I was presented with Bows Against the Barons in 1967 from my school when I was 13. It is signed by Geoffrey Trease! I have treasured it ever since - it is in my bookcase in excellent condition with its dust jacket. I remember particularly that it was for me such an exciting read - I used to read anything and everything relating to the medieval period and Robin Hood. Geoffrey Trease seemed to bring medieval Nottingham to life. He was such a good story teller which made a big impression. Have never come across the book so thought it was great to see that it has been re-printed in all its glory. Hope you don't mind me sending this - I am going to read it again after all these years.
