Charlotte Mew was born in London in 1869, the eldest of four children. She lived in London throughout her life and never married. Her poetry was discovered by Harold Monro at the Poetry Bookshop and became widely admired by many important literary figures of her period, including Virginia Woolf, Siegfried Sassoon and Thomas Hardy.
