George Seferis (1900-1971) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1963. Truthful and magical, his poetry has captivated both Greek and foreign readers. Aptly described by Charlotte Du Cann as `the unlocker of ancient stones and sea voyages', Seferis was
for Peter Levi `one of the greatest writers in this century in any language. ... From Seferis it was possible to learn... what seriousness about poetry is.'
Edmund Keeley is a novelist and critic as well as translator of Greek poetry. He lives in Princeton, NJ. With Philip Sherrard he also edited Odysseus Elytis's `Selected Poems' (1981), and collaborated on selections from Cavafy and Sikelianos.
Philip Sherrard (1922-1995) lived on the island of Evia. His many works include two well-known studies of modern Greek literature, `The Marble Threshing Floor' and `The Wound of Greece'. His selected poems `In the Sign of the Rainbow' was published in 1996.
