Synopsis
Dream Catcher 23 features a range of writings, almost all from Canada. This is a chance to 'dive into other waters' and explore and value the literature from across the ocean. How many of you really know Canadian poets and short story writers? It's been fifteen years since there has been a special issue of Canadian writing in the UK. We all know the famous Margaret Attwood and Alice Munro, but what about other names? At last in Dream Catcher 23 you have a chance to explore and keep up-to-date with Canada's wealth of contemporary writing. It will inspire and excite you as readers and stimulate you as writers. Some highlights are award winning Barry Dempster, regarded as one of Canada's finest poets, and Maureen Hynes winner of Gerald Lampbert Prize and recently the Petra Kenny Prize. George Amabile has appeared in over a 100 anthologies and journals internationally and John B Lee with 50 books published, was the winner of the Winston Collins Award for best Canadian poem. The range is vast from the young Domenico Capilongo to the veteran and winner of Governor General Award PK Page who was shortlisted for the Griffin Prize a few years ago. Along with poetry, Steven Bock's wonderfully witty and moving urban story 'Bonsai Garden' shows Canadian short fiction is as strong as ever. Canada is made up of a large number of sub-cultures; many are represented in issue 23. Also there are two examples of East European fiction which mixes humour with the alarming and strange.
