The Waywiser Press is our publisher of the week


The Waywiser Press is our publisher of the weekThe Waywiser Press, a small independent company, based in London, was founded in late 2001, and started publishing in 2002. It is managed and edited by Philip Hoy.

Waywiser specialises in the publication of modern poetry in English, but are also interested in publishing books belonging to other genres. Thus, in 2002, they published Neil Berry's Articles of Faith, a study of the editors behind Great Britain's leading intellectual journals, from Francis Jeffrey to Karl Miller. Waywiser have also published works of fiction, drama and criticism.

Richard WIilbur, one of Waywiser's authors won the 2006 LILLY PRIZE in the U.S. The $100,000 award is one of the largest prizes for Poetry. "We can only hope that Wilbur is granted another decade, and another book as fine as 'Mayflies'." — Alan Sullivan

21 November 2008 - Modern Poetry in Translation readers in for £1000 Prize!


One Modern Poetry in Translation reader could win £1000 in a competition to write a poem about your home town.

The closing date is almost upon us (31st December 2008) in this annual competition run by United Press, to encourage more people into writing poetry.

“It’s free to enter, and the aim of the competition is to encourage more people to try writing poetry, It’s great therapy and a great way of expressing yourself,” said Peter Quinn, Managing Director of United Press.

This annual competition was won last year by Stephanie Spiers of Stafford who wrote a poem about her local river. The previous year’s winner was Jerry Beachill, who wrote a poem about village life near Rotherham, and previous to that, the winner was Owen Lowery who wrote a poem about Billinge, his home town.

To enter the competition send up to three poems of 160 words and 20 lines each to:

Found in TranslationThe Showcase Before the Tour

In partnership with Oxford Playhouse and in preparation for our 2009 tour. Queer poets, performers and playwrights from Bermuda, South Africa, France, Uruguay, Canada and the UK will be taking over Soho Theatre Studio this coming Monday.

Word/percussive performance duo Amphibia (Andra Simons and Stephane Roul) dance through the dark side of growing up under the Bermuda sun, Akkas Al-Ali hones in on human rights and sexuality in the Muslim World, poet and musician Sandra Alland (one of the winners in our 2008 Writing Competition) and Y.Josephine stretch the limits of language and our imagination with a guitar and a megaphone, Alan C. Smith brings us his biblically inspired series "black cats, cocks and other idols" and Shaun Levin turns a tale of cruising, glitter, tree climbing, and happily ever after.

The New Writing Partnership - Promoting, Developing and Celebrating New Writing

As a coda to New Writing Season 2008 programme of conferences and workshops, The New Writing Partnership, in collaboration with Amb:IT:ion, is organising a half-day ‘thinkshop’ about Writing Re:connected -- you are invited to take part. Our focus for will be: 'What could we, as literary organisations, be looking to offer or cultivate in light of current digital media trends?' and ‘What impact will the developments in digital media have on what we, as organisations in the literature sector, offer the writers, readers and other partners with whom we work?’

The event will take place at Epic, Norwich, between 12:30pm and 6:15pm, on Monday November 24th, 2008. You are invited to join the debate. PLEASE RSVP to confirm attendance.
