Flipped Eye Publishing Limited was formed in Ghana by a group of school friends in a bid to start a literature revival in the country. The first book published by the group in 1999 was "eyes of a boy, lips of a man" by Nii Ayikwei Parkes, who was also one of the minor shareholders in the original company.

Six months after the publication of eyes of a boy Nii decided to devote more time to writing and editing and bought the company from his colleagues. He formed the UK company in 2001 after spending many nights listening to poetry at readings all over London and concluding that the best ambassadors for poetry were these night griots who were so often shunned by bigger publishers. The aim was and still is to produce consistently high quality fiction, non-fiction, and related products with a focus on poetry. We are also keen to raise the profile of performance and oral literature as legitimate and viable forms of artistic interpretation and learning.

Flipped Eye Publishing has slowly established itself as a viable publishing house with nationwide distribution through Borders and Waterstone's and worldwide internet sales.
