So What Kept You? by Chekhov and Carver

So What Kept You? brings together fourteen of the most exciting writers from the UK, USA and Eastern Europe in a celebration of the influence of two short-story masters –Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver.

Writers were invited to consider fragments of text from the notebooks of Chekhov and Carver and complete stories that were never written by the authors themselves. From writer to writer ideas were passed along the generations to bear new fruit. The idea to create the book came from the symbiotic relationship that Raymond Carver felt he had with Anton Chekhov. A new essay by Carver's widow Tess Gallagher explores the way writers can influence each other through time.
