Michael Schmidt was born in Mexico in 1947, and studied at Harvard and at Wadham College, Oxford. He now runs Carcanet Press. His previous books of poetry are `Black Buildings’ (1969), `Bedlam & The Oakwood’ (1970) and `Desert of the Lions’ (1972). The poems in this collection were mostly
written in 1968.
