Luis de Góngora is Spain's greatest poet of the Baroque period. He was much admired by Lorca, and Roy Campbell described him as "a symbolist who contains the whole of Mallarmé and a lot more besides, a symbolist three hundred years before his time."
Michael Smith's translations, in this first English bilingual edition, fluently and accurately convey the timeless qualities of Góngora's intricate and intriguing poetry.
Luis de Góngora was born in 1561 in Córdoba. He made his reputation with two major works, the `Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea' and the `Soledades'. He was forced to move in search of patronage to Madrid, where his finances
and health worsened. He suffered a stroke in 1626 and died a year later in Córdoba.
Michael Smith was born in 1952 in Dublin, where he works as a schoolmaster. His other works include versions of Quevedo, 'On the Anvil' (Dedalus Press), and his `Selected Poems' (Melmoth Press).
