Mark Hodkinson was born in Manchester and now lives in West Yorkshire. He played guitar in several bands, supporting, along the way, The Stone Roses, Pulp and The Wedding Present.

He has written for The Times for over a decade, three years as a columnist. He has also written for The Observer. His book, Believe in the Sign, was long-listed for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and The Guardian and The Times made it one of their sports books of the year. His debut novel, The Last Mad Surge of Youth, has been dubbed the 'rock novel of 2009' by Q magazine and received widespread critical acclaim.
