The three sections of Bei Dao's moving book of poems - `Berlin', `Oslo' and `Stockholm' - are poignant reminders of the restless and rootless life of the exile. All the poems in this bilingual collection were written after Tiananmen Square (4 June 1989), when Bei Dao was away from his Peking home, to which he has so far been unable to return. His poems refer back to this watershed both overtly and in dense images of loss and betrayal. `Old Snow' confirms Bei Dao's standing as China's leading poet.

Bei Dao was born in 1949, and was first nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1993. His other collections in English and published by Anvil are `The August Sleepwalker' (1988), `Old Snow' (1992) and `Landscape Over Zero' (1998).

Bonnie S. McDougall is Professor of Chinese at the University of Edinburgh, having previously taught at Sydney, Harvard and Oslo. During the 1980s she lived for several years in Peking, and has written extensively on Bei Dao and other leading writers and artists in contemporary China.

Chen Maiping, born in 1952, spent the Cultural Revolution years in Inner Mongolia. Returning to Peking, he contributed short stories to `Today' and went on to complete an MA at the Central Academy of Drama. He left China for further studies in Oslo in 1986, and since 1989 has been co-editor with Bei Dao of `Today', revived as a forum for Chinese writers in exile. At present he lives in Stockholm.
