Claws by Stephen Booth

One of the first titles in the new Five Leaves Imprint - Crime Express

The discovery of an illegal haul from the bedroom of a terraced house is a clue to what might be at stake - perhaps the entire future of one of the most prized landscapes in the Peak District National Park.

For young Derbyshire police detective DC Ben Cooper, an assignment to the Rural Crime Team means stepping into the middle of the conflict, without being quite sure whose side he's on. The predators come in all shapes and sizes. And in this battle, not all the victims will be human...

I didn’t realise how useful Claws by Stephen Booth would turn out to be. I heard of it as a short novel he’d written for a different publisher than his usual one, and wanted to read it. It’s part of the new Crime Express series from Five Leaves, and it’s meant to be handy to read on the run, because it’s so small. And that’s a great idea!
The witch has road tested Claws, and it works perfectly. It’s very small. About the size of a postcard, and only 96 pages. And the cover has flaps at both ends, so you have a bookmark that you won’t lose...
Almost forgot; Claws is a Ben Cooper on his own story. It’s about the murky world of wildlife crime with bird killers and egg thieves and what have you. And I do like the ending.

Great title, right? Fans of Stephen Booth’s established police procedurals might balk at shelling out £4.99 for a 96-page novella. However, they’d be fools; this book is part of Booth’s canon, and the only one to date in which readers will get the chance to see D.C. Ben Cooper in action without regular partner D.C. Diane Fry...
