Synopsis
Morning Song The larks of dawn cease their song to hear Sung Lin’s morning melody Each note floats on the wind that blows across the ribboning river Her soft voice shaping every phase like a sculptor’s delicate blade Forms the flowing grace of the merciful goddess, Kwan Yin Reckoning is a unique collection of poetry peopled with vivid images: the poet’s mid-western boyhood, striking word portraits of the jazz greats, the open road of the American west, even ancient Chinese scrolls come to life. Over a remarkable range, Jack Stanley’s verse is accessible yet lyrical, making this British-American poet a significant discovery. This is the first published collection of his poetry. ‘Poets can chase through moments to find a spark. Jack Stanley strolls through moments, and the sun follows.’ — Abe Gibson, First Poet-in-Residence, London Transport Museum ‘Jack Stanley has a poignant gift for capturing the true jazz spirit.’ — Michael Pointon, jazz broadcaster and writer Jack Stanley has enjoyed a long and varied career on both sides of the Atlantic including his own radio show. At 18, he was the youngest broadcaster on the CBS network, covering VJ Day celebrations, marking the end of WW11. After leaving the University of Minnesota, where he taught English, he worked in advertising in New York. He became a creative director and moved to London. His poetry has appeared in anthologies and magazines.
What I love is the way the poems manage to combine a light touch with an often profound echo. They are very lovely and musical - rich in compassion - a certain melancholia or nostalgia - and all with that lightness of touch so hard to achieve; yet done so seemingly effortlessly. And the humour!
