John Scott (1712-1736) was a remarkable Quaker - a social reformer, expert on the turnpike laws, poet, grotto builder and polemicist.  He counted Samuel Johnson among his friends but nonetheless engaged him in controversy over the American colonies and the lives of the poets.  This biography draws upon unpublished letters and some of Scott's unacknowledged writings.
