Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

This book bears witness to the century's moral disaster: war, genocide, the Holocaust, the bomb.

"ForchÈ has never undertaken less than the responsibilities of conscience, and now in The Angel of History she has written a poem that is suddenly important, like the Morning News."
Derek Walcott

Carolyn ForchÈ is one of Americaís most important contemporary poets. Her first book, Gathering the Tribes, won the Yale Younger Poets Award. Her second, The Country Between Us, won the Lamont Poetry Award, and sold over 70,000 copies in America, where its harrowing depiction of the reign of terror in El Salvador by the US-backed military rÈgime was particularly telling. It was published in Britain by Jonathan Cape in 1983. Carolyn ForchÈ has also translated the poetry of Claribel AlegrÌa and recently edited the anthology Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness for Norton. The Angel of History is published in America by HarperCollins.
