Louise Glück was born in New York City in 1943, and was raised on Long Island. Of her previous collection of poems, `Firstborn’, published in England in 1969, John Fuller wrote in `The Listener’: “Her words are alive and her perceptions have strength. This is a very genuine and enjoyable first book.”

Louise Glück has taught at Goddard College, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Virginia, and is a member of the visiting staff of the Fine Arts Work Centre in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Her awards include grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
