Synopsis
Mo McAuley’s collection of short stories The A-Z Man brings together an array of diverse characters displaying human nature at its best and worst. Described by Bridport Prize judge, Rose Tremain, as “a loner going slowly mad in Regent’s Park” the mysterious A – Z Man plays out his life through the city’s streets and signs. A young, estranged girl – The Wendy Bird – takes LSD with disastrous consequences. In A Dog’s Life a middle aged man buys himself a hairpiece and discovers its influence more far-reaching than he expected. In A Way With The Birds the ambitious yet emotionally cold Lance meets his nemesis in the form of Big John, a sulphur crested cockatoo.Disturbing tales of bullying and exploitation sit side by side with stories full of quirky humour, warmth and compassion. But it is humanity that links all these stories and an understanding of the complexity and tension that underlies all relationships.
