To Bury the Dead is an attempt to unravel a 70-year-old political mystery that was to become a chapter, and then a footnote, in American and Spanish literary history. José Robles was one of the earliest victims of Stalinism in Spain and a close friend of the writer John Dos Passos.

Ignacio Martínez de Pisón traces the two men's long friendship, establishes their Republican credentials, and tries to discover how and why Robles was killed since two of the most famous American writers at the time - John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway - both committed anti-fascists, fell out over this unsolved case.

To Bury the Dead is a translation from the original Spanish by award-winning translator Anne McLean. It won the International Rodolfo Walsh Prize for Non Fiction and the Dulce Chacón Prize for Spanish Narrative in 2006.

A literary, historical, political mystery meant to remain buried in American and Spanish history.

A journey through several decades and two countries to uncover the truth behind illegal detentionand extrajudicial execution.
