White Narcissi by Saul, Denise by Saul, Denise

White Narcissi by Saul, Denise

Negotiating a balance that that is rare for an emerging poet, Denise Saul conjures fantastical imagery in the examination of everyday themes to create a landscape that is uniquely hers. Every one of the poems in White Narcissi pulses with pregnant brevity, the poets eye never missing the dead ants whose “black bodies lay/ like full stops on the ground.”

There is a brutal elegance at work here as she dissects slivers of transience to expose their hidden muscles. In ‘Scent of Sex'; she notes her “oldest cousin wears white./ Her bridal gown unfolds on the aisle as/ a lily heavy with scent of its sex./ As I hold her veil, pollen stains my hand.”; while in ‘When We Sleep’ she conjures the rage of a woman scorned: “I long to cut off her head/ while she sleeps with you// and then hold it up to your face/ to petrify you with her gaze.”

The poems in here are consistently startling in their brilliance and it is no surprise that the selectors at the Poetry Book Society have chosen White Narcissi as their featured pamphlet for Winter 2007.
